Tug of War, Laughs & Connections

UHMCC is still buzzing from our Wallaceville Open Day on April 6! We were absolutely thrilled to welcome around 300 wonderful people through the doors, and we want to send a huge thank you to everyone who joined us. Whether you came with questions, shared your stories, or simply caught up with friends, you helped make the day such a success.

The energy was contagious—especially during those epic games of tug of war (don’t worry, no one went home with battle scars!). It was amazing to see our community come together, connect, and celebrate. Days like this remind us why we love what we do: creating spaces where people can meet, kōrero, laugh, and enjoy the richness of our diverse community.

A big ngā mihi to our fantastic volunteers and organisers who kept everything running smoothly. Special shout-out to Jess Setu from Collective Hutt Valley—a total superstar—who nailed the promotions, kept everyone fed, and even managed the face painting queues like a pro. Jess, you’re a rockstar!

We’d also like to thank:

  • Upper Hutt Library for their awesome stall,

  • Citizens Advice Bureau for sharing helpful info and supporting the community,

  • Upper Hutt Community Patrol for keeping us safe,

  • Upper Hutt Community Gardens for their vision of a greener Upper Hutt, and

  • The Y for bringing along sports gear and plenty of fun.

We can’t wait to see even more of you at our next event! If you’d like to get involved or lend a hand, reach out—we’d love to have you on board. Keep an eye out for updates, and we’ll see you soon!
