Upper Hutt Multicultural Strategy

MC Strategy Draft.pdf

In 2021, the Upper Hutt Multicultural Council took an important step toward strengthening inclusivity and community wellbeing by presenting a draft Multicultural Strategy to the Upper Hutt City Council.

The strategy was developed through conversations with local communities, reflecting the voices, experiences, and aspirations of people from diverse cultural backgrounds. Its purpose was to provide a framework for building a more welcoming, inclusive, and connected Upper Hutt, where everyone has the opportunity to participate fully in community life.

The Strategy provides clear direction for:

  • Strengthening cultural infrastructure
  • Embedding inclusive education through Huarahi Hou
  • Ensuring that civic life reflects the full richness of Upper Hutt’s people

It is designed as a living document, closely aligned with Upper Hutt’s 10-year Long-Term Plan (LTP). This ensures that as our city’s priorities evolve, the Strategy remains current, relevant, and future-focused.

Since then, the Upper Hutt Multicultural Council has continued to champion this work and support its implementation. We look forward to partnering with the incoming Council to keep building an Upper Hutt where every culture is respected, every voice is valued, and our whole community can thrive together.

Importantly, during the recent Meet the Candidates survey, many candidates indicated that they would actively look at implementing the Multicultural Strategy. This strong level of commitment highlighted the broad recognition of the Strategy’s value in shaping a more inclusive future for Upper Hutt.
