My Child is Awesome- An Evening of Stories, Sharing, and Song

We had a wonderful evening at “My Child is Awesome” on Thursday, June 12 at Maidstone Intermediate! The night was all about connection—bringing whānau together to share their experiences of schooling in Aotearoa, and to talk about the differences they’ve noticed compared to education back home. The kōrero was rich and insightful, and it was so heartwarming to see families opening up, asking questions, and supporting one another.

For families with little ones still years away from intermediate, the evening was especially valuable. It gave them the chance to put some of those puzzling questions directly to the principal of Maidstone Intermediate, helping demystify aspects of Aotearoa’s schooling system that can feel tricky for many newcomers.

On top of the conversations, we were treated to some incredible performances! Our talented tamariki and our friends from the Chinese Senior Citizens group wowed the crowd with their creativity, skill, and passion. It’s always such a privilege to see our young people shine on stage, and moments like these remind us just how much potential and pride exists within our community.

A huge thank you goes to Domino’s Upper Hutt for kindly catering the evening—your generosity truly added to the warmth of the night. We’re also deeply grateful to Upper Hutt City Council, with special thanks to Deputy Mayor Hellen Swales and Welcoming Communities Coordinator Barry Gall, for your ongoing support.

Events like these remind us of the magic that happens when people come together, share stories, and celebrate one another. We can’t wait to do it again!
