Happy Waitangi Day e te whānau! ❤️
On February 6th, 2025, we marked 185 years since the signing of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, a moment that remains vital in shaping Aotearoa’s history. The Upper Hutt Multicultural Council was honored to participate in one of the many Waitangi Day celebrations held around the country, reflecting on our shared journey towards a united future.
A Special Celebration at Ōrongomai Marae
We were privileged to be part of the Waitangi Day celebrations at Ōrongomai Marae, a place deeply rooted in Māori culture. One of our committee members, Inspector Anthony Tebbutt, participated in the wero during the morning pōwhiri, symbolizing our commitment as Tauiwi (non-Māori) to being tangata tiriti (people of the Treaty) and strengthening our relationships with tangata whenua. It was a powerful reminder of the importance of the Treaty and our ongoing responsibility to honor its principles.
A Day of Reflection and Unity
Waitangi Day is a time for reflection on the progress we’ve made and the work still to be done in fostering genuine partnership and equality. It’s an opportunity to connect, engage, and reflect on the Treaty’s role in shaping our shared future. In Upper Hutt, we are lucky to be part of a diverse community where inclusivity and respect are central values, and Waitangi Day reminds us all of the importance of unity in achieving these goals.
Strengthening Relationships and Moving Forward Together
As a multicultural community, the Upper Hutt Multicultural Council is committed to promoting understanding, respect, and equality for all. We believe the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi—partnership, protection, and participation—are essential in building a just and inclusive society. By embracing these values, we can strengthen our community and work together towards a better future for everyone.
We hope everyone had a wonderful Waitangi Day, and we look forward to continuing this journey of unity and collaboration in Upper Hutt. Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou katoa!
