Upper Hutt Multicultural CouncilThe Upper Hutt Multicultural Council (UHMC) hosted Meet the Candidates Evening on Thursday, 25 September 2025 at Whirinaki Whare Taonga. From 6:30–8:30pm, the venue was filled with energy as 22 mayoral and councillor candidates joined around 75 community members for an evening of lively discussion and connection.
Ahead of the event, the UHMC invited candidates to complete a questionnaire on the Multicultural Strategy, helping to spark thoughtful conversations on the night. It was heartening to see many candidates openly share their views on diversity, inclusion, and what it means to build a welcoming Upper Hutt.
While not everyone was familiar with the strategy, many expressed a genuine interest in learning more and supporting its future. The strong focus on community, connection, and celebrating diversity was inspiring, and it showed the shared commitment to making Upper Hutt a place where everyone feels they truly belong.
